International Day for Biological Diversity, which was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993 to highlight the critical role of preserving the diversity of life on Earth, is celebrated worldwide on 22 May. It. This date was selected to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992 as a global agreement serving as the foundation of international nature protection efforts.
In Croatia, this day is also celebrated as Nature Conservation Day based on the Decision of the Croatian Parliament from 2003. In this manner, we doubly celebrate the importance of nature, both globally and nationally.
Employees of the Institute for Environment and Nature Protection joined the celebration of this day in Maksimir Park, where Zagreb City Nature organised a special programme reminding us of the abundance of our nature and our shared responsibility for its conservation. Our knowledge quiz attracted special attention as a fun way to encourage visitors to test their knowledge about nature while also learning something new.
Presenting the Improve River LIFE project at public events is a part of activities aimed at public awareness raising. During the project's duration, its presentations are planned at other similar events across Croatia in order to make the widest possible audience aware of the importance of river ecosystems’ conservation and the values that nature provides to all of us.
