As part of the Improve River LIFE project, workshops were held in March 2026 for farmers, fishermen, and stakeholders from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the areas of the Jadro and Vrljika rivers.
The workshop in Imotski took place on 12 March at Hotel Zdilar, while the workshop in Solin was held on 13 March at the Jadro – Source of Life Visitor Centre, ahead of the International Day of Action for Rivers.
Focus on the Conservation of River Ecosystems
During the workshops, special emphasis was placed on the importance of preserving river ecosystems and the role of different sectors in nature protection. Participants discussed how agriculture, fisheries, and aquaculture can contribute to the conservation of the Jadro and Vrljika rivers, as well as to the protection of their unique and endangered species, with particular emphasis on the softmouth trout.
Sustainable Agriculture and Water Protection
The workshops also addressed topics related to environmentally sustainable agriculture, focusing on reducing negative impacts on soil and water resources and preserving biodiversity.
The importance of applying sustainable agricultural practices was highlighted, as these contribute to maintaining water quality, protecting habitats, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of production, particularly in sensitive areas such as the Natura 2000 network.
The Role of Fisheries and Aquaculture
Participants were also introduced to the impacts of fishing and aquaculture on fish populations, with an emphasis on the need for responsible resource management.
Key conservation measures highlighted included preserving the natural structure of populations, breeding and restocking with native species, controlling invasive species, and strengthening cooperation with the scientific and professional community.
The Importance of Local Community Cooperation
Through the exchange of experiences and open discussion, the importance of local community cooperation, responsible use of natural resources, and the active involvement of all stakeholders in nature conservation processes was emphasized.
The workshops once again confirmed that joint action can significantly contribute to the preservation of rivers and their exceptionally valuable natural heritage.
